Highs in the 100s for Las Vegas

Perseid meteor shower visible tonight outside of bright city lights

Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2009 | 5:34 a.m.

If hot sunny days in the 100s are your cup of tea, you'll love Las Vegas today.

A clear sky with a high afternoon temperature of 104 degrees is on tap today for the Las Vegas Valley, according to the National Weather Service.

The normal high for today is 103 degrees and the record is 116 degrees, set in 1940.

Winds will be fairly calm, becoming east-southeast through the day between 4 and 7 mph.

Tonight's skies will also be mostly clear, with temperatures dipping to a low of 82 degrees, the weather service said.

And if you get out of the glare of the bright city lights tonight, you can still catch the high point of the annual Perseid meteor shower.

The meteors are visible as the Earth passes through the densest part of the debris stream from the comet Swift-Tuttle.

The meteor shower, which peaks about Aug. 11 and 12, will produce meteors reaching 60 or more per hour, according to NASA.

NASA recommends skywatchers find a rural area out of the glare of city lights, spread a blanket on the ground, lie down and look up.

Perseids can appear in any part of the sky, their tails pointing back to the constellation Perseus.
