Letter to the Editor:

Las Vegas needs better public transportation

I dropped off my vehicle at one of the dealerships in the Henderson Auto Mall. The dealership didn’t have a shuttle service, so I decided to walk to the Galleria mall, intending to take the bus. I had never even walked in front of a bus stop, let alone rode the bus.

The public transportation system in Nevada needs to be improved greatly, especially in Las Vegas. As a college student at UNLV, I know classmates who have to wake up at 5 a.m. to be at the bus stop at 6 a.m. to finally get to class at 8 a.m.

During rush hour, the freeways turn into large parking lots. At this point it’s better to walk than to drive. Imagine if our public transit system were vastly improved. How many cars could we get off the road?

This year Congress has the opportunity to vote on a bill that would determine priorities for mass transit over the next six years. As the majority leader, Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., has a great opportunity to ensure the public’s interest is front and center, fully supporting more efficient public transportation.
