Cooler temperatures move in to Las Vegas

City to get relief from triple-digit heat through Saturday

It isn't quite fall yet. But Las Vegas is getting some respite from triple-digit heat for the next two days, says the National Weather Service.

Today's early morning temperatures were in the low 70s, with a reading of 71 degrees at 5:56 a.m. at McCarran International Airport. The normal low for this date is 78 degrees and the record low was 63, set in 1950.

Today's high temperature is expected to be only 90 degrees, which is well below the normal high of 103. And Saturday's high is expected to reach only 94 degrees, forecasters said.

The abnormally cool August weather is being brought on by an unseasonably strong area of low pressure over the Pacific Northwest and gusty winds in the Mojave Desert, the weather service said.

A slow warming trend will bring temperatures back to near normal early in the upcoming week and monsoon moisture could return late next week, forecasters said.

High afternoon temperatures will be 102 degrees Sunday, 103 Monday and 105 both Tuesday and Wednesday.

The high temperature reached only 95 degrees Thursday at McCarran International Airport. That tied the previous record low maximum temperature for that date set in 1963.

Other temperature records were made in California. The Bishop Airport reached only 83 degrees Thursday, tying the record set in 1999. And at the Barston Daggett Airport, the high was 94 degrees, breaking the old low maximum record of 95 degrees in 1999, the weather service said.
