Letter to the editor:

Clunkers program is achieving its goals

We have an anomaly in our elected representatives’ attitudes toward what works and what doesn’t. Under the last administration and during a Democratic majority in Congress, the TARP program, which allowed Citibank to give bonuses to top-echelon management, was enacted even though there is doubt that TARP is working.

Under this administration, a program is working so well that some in Congress, primarily the “just say no” people, want to end it. The Cash for Clunkers program not only has enhanced employment opportunities, maintained auto dealers and provided people with a chance to better their quality of life, but it is also reducing our dependence on fossil fuels and thereby our import deficit.

Why would someone want to terminate a working program and harm the U.S. public? Sometimes I think our members of Congress are more interested in getting their names out to the public than getting good deeds accomplished, especially in election years.
