Four post offices removed from list of possible closures

Four Las Vegas Valley post offices have been removed from a list of five that were being considered for closure, Sen. Harry Reid announced today.

The only office in Las Vegas that the U.S. Postal Service is still eyeing is the Las Vegas Strip Station, Reid said. The Garside, Huntridge and King Station offices, along with the Desert Inn Retail Unit, are no longer up for consideration.

The Postal Service has been considering closing branches around the country because of a decrease in workload.

The news comes after a meeting between Reid and Jack Potter, the U.S. postmaster general, and Jim Bilbray, a former Nevada congressman and current member of the U.S. Postal Service Board of Governors.

“The loss of these locations would have hurt these communities and I am pleased that Postmaster Potter and his team have decided to keep these stations open,” Reid said in a statement.

On Monday, Las Vegas City Councilwoman Lois Tarkanian rallied residents outside the Garside Post Office, saying a closure would make it difficult for senior citizens and residents who rely on public transportation to utilize post office services.
