Letter to the editor:

Dissent on incentive program is misguided

The “Cash for Clunkers” program is a tremendous success. Thousands of gas-guzzling vehicles have been removed from the streets for new, more efficient cars and trucks.

Car dealerships, car manufactures, our environment and thousands of buyers have benefitted. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said the average miles per gallon of vehicles traded in was 15.8 and vehicles sold, 25.4.

The ingenious program far exceeded expectations. The $1 billion appropriated went much faster than expected. President Barack Obama wants to extend the program by adding $2 billion. The Republicans, who get upset when any Obama program works, say hold on, no more cash, no more benefits. They are trying to stall additional funding. Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., asked what happened with the first billion dollars. Duh, it was spent to do the job it was designed to do. Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., said these people were going to buy vehicles anyway, so why help them?

The Party of No continues its pursuit of opposing anything that makes Obama and the Democrats look good. Perhaps if Republicans cared about people more than their party they would be better off, as would our country.
