Monday, Aug. 3, 2009 | 11:02 a.m.

Crash Location

One person is dead and 11 others were injured early this morning when an SUV veered off Interstate 15 near Sloan and crashed in a desert area near rural Las Vegas Boulevard, the Nevada Highway Patrol said.

Evidence and witness statements indicate a Ford Expedition with California license plates was driving northbound on I-15 just before 2:30 a.m. when the right rear tire tread separated, NHP spokesman Sgt. Kevin Honea said. The vehicle drifted across the travel lanes before it entered the dirt shoulder between I-15 and Las Vegas Boulevard, where the vehicle overturned, Honea said.

Twelve people were in the SUV, which was equipped with seat belts for nine people, he said.

"There were multiple ejections," Honea said.

One woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Five people were taken to University Medical Center and admitted to the trauma unit; five were transported to Sunrise Hospital's trauma unit, authorities said.

At least three were admitted in critical condition, authorities said.

The male driver was taken to St. Rose Dominican Hospitals - Siena Campus, where he was treated and released, Honea said.

The identity of the dead woman will be released by the Clark County Coroner's Office.
