Fire watch coming Wednesday for counties northwest of Las Vegas

Strong winds, dry conditions in forecast for Esmeralda and Nye counties

Dry air and strong winds moving Wednesday into Nevada have lead the National Weather Service in Las Vegas to issue a fire weather watch for for Esmeralda and Nye counties.

The watch area, which is northwest of the Las Vegas Valley, is in effect from Wednesday morning through Wednesday evening, the weather service said this afternoon.

An unseasonably strong area of low pressure will move toward northern California on Wednesday, bringing increasing southwest winds and dry air to southern Nevada, the weather service said.

Wind gusts around 35 mph Wednesday afternoon, along with relative humidity levels below 15 percent, will create conditions where outdoor fires could spread rapidly, the weather service said.

Meanwhile, the weather service said that some moisture will begin to increase from the southeast Monday and Tuesday leading to a slight chance of thunderstorms on Tuesday over southeast Nevada, northwest Arizona and far eastern California.

Temperatures in Las Vegas today are expected to top out around 106 degrees, and tonight's temperature will drop to a low of around 83 degrees, forecasters said.

Monday's high will be 106 degrees, the weather service said.
