Pedestrian critically injured in downtown Las Vegas

Pedestrian injured

A 45-year-old man suffered injuries when he was struck by a car while trying to cross Fremont Street late Saturday night in downtown Las Vegas, according to Metro police.

Dean Halfacre, Las Vegas, was transported to University Medical Center, where he was admitted in critical condition, police said.

The accident happened approximately 11:51 p.m. on Fremont Street about 34 feet east of 11th Street, police said.

Evidence at the scene and a witness indicated the pedestrian was trying to cross Fremont from the south curb to the north curb outside of a crosswalk and not at an intersection, police said.

Halfacre was struck as he entered the path of a 1994 Infiniti J30, which was traveling east on Fremont Street in the left of two eastbound travel lanes, officers said.

The driver of the car, John Powell, 67, Las Vegas, and a passenger in the car, Richard Longmire, 53, Las Vegas, were not injured, police said.

Officers said it appeared pedestrian error was the cause of the accident, which remains under investigation.
