August brings more high heat to Las Vegas

July 2009 was fourth-hottest July on record

Updated Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009 | 5:32 p.m.

The hottest month of the year is over. But August is still bringing triple-digit temperatures to the Las Vegas Valley.

The National Weather Service says afternoon highs will be slightly above the normal hot summer desert temperatures through next Wednesday: 106 degrees Sunday, 105 Monday, 105 Tuesday and 106 Wednesday.

Today's high temperature was 107 degrees, recorded between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. at McCarran International Airport.

The normal high for Las Vegas for today's date is 104 degrees, with the record high of 116 degrees set in 1979. Friday's high was 108 degrees at 3:06 p.m. at McCarran.

Tonight's forecast calls for temeperatures to drop to a low of 84 tonight, with mostly clear skies.

There is a chance tonight for isolated thunderstorms along the southern Sierra Crest west of Bishop, east across south-central Nevada and far northern Mohave County, the weather service said. However, the Las Vegas area will remain dry, forecasters said.

Although July 2009 didn't bring any single-day heat records, it will go down as the fourth hottest July since records started in 1937, the weather service said. The average temperature for the month was 94.7 degrees.

The five warmest Julys ever in Las Vegas are:

1. 95.4 degrees in 2007,

2. 95.3 degrees in 2005,

3. 94.8 degrees in 2003 and 2006,

4. 94.7 degrees in 2009,

5. 94.5 degrees in 2002.
