North Las Vegas offers building-permit amnesty

The city of North Las Vegas is offering residents three months of amnesty on fines and fees for existing, non-permitted structures on their property.

Residents who attend free seminars in June or July can obtain permits without being cited or having to pay the usual costs, city Building Official Greg Blackburn said.

“We try to educate people on the importance of why they should have permits, so if they ever have a problem in the future, their homeowners’ insurance wouldn’t deny them,” Blackburn said. “It’s also so they can be safe.”

City inspectors will provide a free initial inspection of the non-permitted structures to those who attend a seminar so they can receive a permit. The seminars will be offered in English and Spanish. The first is scheduled for June 20.

The amnesty period runs from June through August, though that period could be extended into September, Blackburn said.
