Clark County will launch its lawn mower exchange program Saturday at its Earth Day Rendezvous Celebration at Sam Boyd Stadium.

The county has 2,000 electric mowers to offer this year, twice the number as last year, and they will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Residents must apply to swap their gas-powered lawn mower for a more eco-friendly electric one.

The mowers, normally retailing for $400 each, will be provided to residents who meet the program criteria for $99.

NV Energy donated $200,000 and the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles provided $238,000 in grants to subsidize the cost of the mowers.

Eliminating one gas mower is like removing 43 cars from the road based on the amount of smog-forming hydrocarbons generated, said Tony Sanchez, senior vice president of public policy and external affairs for NV Energy.

The Neuton electric mowers offered use about $5 of electricity per year.

"This program is an example of our commitment to creating a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable community," County Commission Chairman Rory Reid said.

Last year, the county sold out the 1,000 mowers in two weeks. The success of the program encouraged NV Energy to help expand the program, Michael Yackira, president and CEO of NV Energy, said.

Valley residents can apply at Earth Day Rendezvous at the soccer field next to Sam Boyd Stadium, 7000 E. Russell Road.

Two mowers will be raffled at the event.

Applications will be available at the Department of Air Quality and Environmental Management offices located at the Clark County Government Center, 500 Grand Central Parkway, and at Henderson City Hall, 240 Water St.

Residents will be responsible for delivering their gas-powered mower to the appropriate recycling center along with the voucher.

Gas-powered lawn mowers turned in at the recycler will be destroyed and recycled for scrap metal. Only one lawn mower can be exchanged per household.
