Letter to the editor:

Which ideology better serves U.S.?

Liberals think they want only what is best for everyone. They think that because they have good intentions, the policies they support are good and should be supported by everyone else.

They think people who don’t support their policies must have bad intentions. They congratulate themselves on their compassion, their sense of fairness, their consideration for others.

Liberals see themselves fighting for the powerless and the disenfranchised, never the powerful. It’s an article of their faith that the underdog always deserves compassion.

They are uncomfortable being a citizen of the wealthiest, most powerful nation in the history of the world, so they always favor policies that diminish America’s power and wealth.

Conservatives think it’s best for everyone when people decide and do what’s best for them. They support policies that give people the maximum possible freedom to pursue their own happiness and that punish people for interfering with others’ pursuit of happiness.

They show compassion to innocents and to people who earn it by their actions. Being destitute isn’t a sufficient qualification for their compassion.

Conservatives appreciate wealth and power, because they know they are more secure having them, and they know that neither is guaranteed. They are grateful to be citizens of America, and they think the rest of the world would be better off if it were to adopt America’s economic and political systems.

They are unapologetic about being American.

Which philosophy do you think serves America and the rest of the world best?
