Letter to the editor:

Suicide prevention resources available

Thank you for the informative article in Sunday’s Las Vegas Sun, “Economic plunge cited as factor in suicide rate spike.”

We would also encourage your readers to recognize and understand the varied risk factors and warning signs for suicide (including, but not exclusive to, the current economic downturn), the complicated nature of suicidal thoughts and behavior, and the availability of community resources for assistance.

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (answered primarily by the Crisis Call Center in Reno) is a reliable hotline and referral resource available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Lifeline number is 1-800-273-TALK (1-800-273-8255).

The Office of Suicide Prevention (established in 2005 in the Nevada Health and Human Services Department) serves as an educational resource for suicide prevention, intervention and postvention (a term that means bereavement support and assistance for suicide attempt survivors), as well as printed material.

Information is on our Web site: suicideprevention.nv.gov.
