An inmate at the North Las Vegas Detention Center has died, allegedly at the hands of his cellmate, the North Las Vegas Police Department said.

The victim's cellmate, Armando Munoz-Ornelas, 25, has been charged with murder in connection with the death. He had been in the detention center since Tuesday on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer, police spokeswoman Chrissie Coon said.

The 31-year-old inmate was found under a mattress in his cell, bleeding from the face and not breathing at about 2:33 a.m. Thursday, police said. He was unaccounted for during routine checks, which prompted an investigation and the discovery of his body.

Detention officers requested medical attention for the victim, but he was later pronounced dead, authorities said.

The victim had been in jail since March 16 on two misdemeanor charges: one for trespassing and one for loitering, Coon said.

Information about the motive and cause of death hasn't been released.
