Jane Johnston won the Women's Southern Nevada Golf Association Amateur Championship on Sept. 11.

Golfer Jane Johnston owes her friends a thank you.

The Green Valley resident had no plans of competing in the Women’s Southern Nevada Golf Association Amateur Championship, but at the prodding of friends like Debbie Love, she registered at the last minute. Two days later, Johnston left the Silverstone Golf Club as the overall net champion on Sept. 11.

Johnston, 55, shot rounds of 84 and 80 on the par-72 course, and with her handicap of 14 strokes, the Dragon Ridge Country Club member finished with a 70-66 net score. She edged Legacy Golf Club’s Oksoon Jeong’s who shot a net 73-67 and Red Rock Country Club’s Jina Doh who took third with a net 71-72.

Net scores are calculated by subtracting a player’s handicap from their end-of-the-day score.

“I had a pretty good tournament,” Johnston said. “I never really felt like I was in a groove or anything but I basically stayed out of trouble. I got off the tees well and on the second day I stayed out of the rough.”

Johnston was reluctant to enter because she had not played her best at the association’s Quad Tournament on Sept. 9. Love said Johnston’s generally positive attitude helped he put her previous performance behind her.

“Jane is so fun to play with because regardless of how she’s doing or how anyone in her group is doing she stays positive,” Love said. “I think that helped her out. And, her putting was fantastic.”

Johnston only needed 25 putts during the second day of the tournament.

“My putting just agreed with me that day,” she said. “The greens were real friendly to me. A lot of things went right. The weather was good. I’m familiar with the course. I just had a good feeling that second day.”

Johnston took up golf 14 years ago as a way to spend more time with her husband, a life-long golfer. She wasn’t improving until she began taking lessons from Boulder City Golf Club pro Rusty Postlewait.

“Rusty helped me so much,” she said. “He was able to fix a lot things for me and made playing that much more fun.”

Johnston is preparing for the First Annual Kevin Sorbo Celebrity Golf Tournament charity event at Dragon Ridge on Oct. 10 and 11.
