Gas prices lower after biggest one-day jump in oil

A day after oil prices recorded their biggest one-day gain ever, the price at the pump is headed in the opposite direction.

Las Vegas continues to have some of the cheapest gas in the country, according to a daily report this morning from auto club AAA. The average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline today in the valley is $3.543.

The national average is $3.726 a gallon, which is down from Monday and about 39 cents below the record high set on June 17.

The price of oil briefly spiked more than $25 a barrel Monday, shattering the one-day record as unease about the government's $700 billion bailout plan pummeled the dollar and prompted investors to buy safe-haven assets. Light, sweet crude for October delivery settled Monday at $120.92, up $16.37.

Crude oil prices are within striking distance of their all-time record of $147.27, reached in July.

The average price of a gallon of gas in Nevada today is $3.591. Only 11 states have a lower average price -- the lowest being New Jersey at $3.447.

Gas prices in Las Vegas are down almost 73 cents from the record set on June 20. A month ago the average price per gallon was $3.744 in Las Vegas; a year ago it was $2.741.
