Sun City board member steps down

Ed Walterscheid resigned from the Sun City Summerlin Board of Directors on Aug. 25 due to health reasons.

The Sun City Summerlin Community Association's Board of Directors has a vacancy in light of board member Ed Walterscheid's resignation on Aug. 25.

Walterscheid, 72, stepped down due to health reasons after serving on the board since February 2007.

"He will be sorely missed," said Board President Richard Post. "It's hard to describe the hole he leaves in the board."

After moving to Sun City Summerlin from Los Alamos, N.M., in 2002, Walterscheid soon became involved in the community.

He served three years on the Association's Legal Services Committee as well as two years on the Election Committee before being elected to the Association's Board of Directors in 2007.

"It was a natural progression," he said. "I was looking to become more involved in community matters."

Walterscheid was the deputy attorney for the Los Alamos National Laboratory before his retirement — experience Post said was valuable to the board in Sun City Summerlin.

The next step for the Board of Directors will be to find Walterscheid's temporary replacement — if there will be one at all.

At its next meeting on Sept. 15, the board plans to decide whether to appoint a replacement, post a notice seeking a volunteer to fill the spot or simply leave the vacancy open until the term expires this February.

At that point, the seat would be up for a general election.

"At least two board members have expressed a desire to leave it vacant, but it's always difficult to predict," Post said. "Whether or not that will prevail, I have no way of knowing."

As chairman of the Legal Services Committee, Walterscheid was involved in reviewing governing documents and preparing written revisions for the board to consider and submit for approval.

If the Board of Directors revised any aspects of the community's rules and regulations, Walterscheid and a nine-member committee of volunteer residents — all of whom are retired attorneys — would make sure the changes were in compliance with state law.

He also served as the board secretary, keeping records of each meeting and responding to all correspondents directed to the Association.

"Ed has been a stalwart supporter of our community and he brought a wealth of knowledge and guidance to the board on matters that have come before it," Post said. "We could always count on him to give clear, objective advice on ways we ought to be proceeding. Ed would always give me a straightforward, honest answer."
