Churches to hold yard sales for charity

Two houses of worship in the Summerlin area, Desert Spring United Methodist Church and Faith Community Lutheran Church, are planning community-wide yard sales to raise funds for charity.

Desert Spring United Methodist, at 120 N. Pavilion Center Drive across the street from Palo Verde High School, is hosting its first ever yard sale from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 27.

Assorted goods for sale — donated by more than 400 members of the church — will include furniture, electronics, kitchen items, toys and tools. Proceeds will go toward United Methodist Women's Global Ministries and its efforts to support needy women and children.

Faith Community Lutheran Church, at 2700 S. Town Center Drive at the intersection of Town Center Drive and Sahara Avenue, is hosting a yard sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 25 in the church parking lot.

There will also be a barbecue and a church bake sale.

"All proceeds will go toward the World Relief and Human Care Fund, which is a global effort that helps flood and disaster victims," said event coordinator Laurie Varney.

Further north in Sun City Summerlin, a public yard sale is planned from 7 a.m. to noon on April 25 of next year, and it's one of the only opportunities for residents to sell their used goods.

Otherwise, the community's provisions only allow each homeowner in Sun City Summerlin to host a single one-day yard sale each year — and only in the case of an impending move or a death in the family.

Sun City Summerlin's community yard sale will take place at Mountain Shadows Community Center, at 9103 Del Webb Boulevard. For more information call 363-3581.
