Letter to the editor:

A ‘shoot from the hip’ move by McCain

Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008 | 2:06 a.m.

In one of his first important choices, Sen. John McCain picked Sarah Palin as his running mate. McCain is 72 with a history of reccurring melanoma. If McCain were elected, Palin would be a heartbeat away from the presidency.

Her qualifications are few: She was the mayor of Wasilla, a city with fewer adults than Sun City Summerlin. In addition, she has been the governor of Alaska, a state whose population is less than that of Las Vegas, for less than two years. There are literally thousands of Americans more qualified for the vice presidency than Palin.

If McCain wanted a female running mate, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison has impeccable credentials.

This poor choice illustrates McCain’s habit of “shooting from the hip” rather than carefully analyzing all options. In our complex and changing world, we can’t take a chance on a “shoot from the hip” president.

Discussion: 55 comments so far…

  1. His qualifications are few: he was a state senator. In addition, he has been a part-time US senator for three years. There are literally thousands of Americans more qualified for the presidency than Obama.

  2. I thought we were done with all these "I am insulted by ... " comments. Was Irwin under a rock, or did the Sun just hold it back to run today. Piling on by the Sun.

This shot from the hip hit the target.

As AK Governor and a Commander Sarah Palin is making decisions daily that constantly affect people’s lives, sets the AK State’s priorities, runs the administrative services of AK state, deals with the budget and finances, ensuring the readiness and deployment of the National Guard, traveled twice to Iraq to visit her troops, deals with hiring and firing 24,000 employees, implemented a $40 billion international NG pipeline deal, has international trade experience with both border countries Russia and Canada, and crusades against corruption.

Senators Obama and Biden make no decisions, they travel, they talk, they hold hearing, and they vote (if in session) as one of 100 senators following Harry Reid; and 435 representative following Nancy Pelosi, in a feebly attempt to pass a operating budget (non this year so far) and a few laws.

  3. Hey Future2012,
Nice overgeneralized pablum you wrote there. Can you give us specific decisions she has made and what the effects of those decisions have been? Were they legal and in accordance with the Alaska state constitution? Does she personally oversee the hiring and firing of employees and, if so, how good have those decisions been? Come on and man up here. Give us specifics.

  4. As the radical right has proven around here, they're about to nominate Palin without knowing her stance on most of the major issues of the day.

    Her foreign policy? Who knows!
Her national security policy? Take a guess!

And they want another 8 years? No way.

  5. As the radical left has proven around here, they're about to nominate Obama without knowing his executive decisions? Who knows if he has any!

And they want 4 years? No way.

  6. Hey McSchafer,

Nice overgeneralized pablum you wrote there. Can you give us specific decisions he has made and what the effects of those decisions have been? Were they legal and in accordance with the any constitution? Does he personally oversee the hiring and firing of employees and, if so, how good have those decisions been? Come on and man up here. Give us specifics.

I throw you a bone......can you list the major accomplishments he did as US Senator?

Please do not include that he "ran a campaign" as proof of an accomplishment or qualification for president.

  7. Nance, name 5 executive decisions by John McCain.

    1.
    2.
    3.
    4.
    5.

  8. nance, geeeeeez .... can you PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE just ONCE try to think for yourself???

Just once. Try. I have faith that you can actually do it.

    Call me an optimist.

  9. Jfnance32, I asked you several times yesterday and I'll ask again today since she is going to be nominated for the second most powerful office in the White House in a few hours:

What is Sarah Palin's position on Iran?
What is Sarah Palin's position on Israel?
What is Sarhah Palin's position on Syria?
What is Sarah Palin's position on North Korea?
What is Sarah Palin's position on the Russia/Georgia conflict?
What is Sarah Palin's position on Iraq?

Does it bother you that she said, ""I've been so focused on state government, I haven't really focused much on the war in Iraq."

We don't need someone in the White House who is clueless about what's going on!

"Ms. Palin describes herself as a "hard-core fiscal conservative." But she has not signed the anti-tax pledge pushed by Grover Norquist's American Taxpayers Union. In fact, Ms. Palin supported Wasilla's first-ever sales tax and pushed to raise it as mayor (while simultaneously reducing property taxes); as governor, she increased taxes on oil companies. In 1994, she advocated a flat tax in a campaign ad for a Republican Senate candidate. "

She seems to describe herself as one thing, but then supports the opposite.

I just want someone to tell me what her positions are.

Are the republicans going to nominate her without knowing where she stands? That's insane!!!!!

  10. You're a sadist, PatriciaLV, there's no hope for little boy lost.

In the face of pressure from ksand99, Nance was reduced to lying last night in a desperate attempt to be relevant.

Hey Nance, were you aware that Abraham Lincoln had no executive experience before entering office, right?

  11. No, I rather think of myself as a masochist :)

    I'm just tired of seeing the same old ridiculous non-arguments that we've seen before - 1980, 1984, 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, blah blah blah.

They NEVER come up with anything new. And yet, as being led to slaughter, the sheep follow faithfully and bleat the mantra dutifully.

It reminds me of that very first Macintosh commercial in 1984 or so ......

BTW, ksand, we already HAVE "someone in the White House who is clueless about what's going on". But you knew that.

  12. LOL, the 1984 Mac ad is exactly what I thought of when I saw this picture:

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/telegraph/mul...

A four-story tall talking head and the mindless cattle beneath, all nodding in agreement with W?

    Priceless.

  13. I tried to find out what Sarah Palin thinks on the issues, but all her web sites have been pulled down. Her position papers, her gubernatorial campaign site, all gone.

Must be a server malfunction, right?

  14. I went looking last night & found the same thing and something else that was kind of interesting.

I used the Google cached copy, clicked on what appeared to be an active link on the page (Palin for Governor web site) and it took me to ..... www.johnmccain.com.

Too bad the Google cache only captures the front/landing page.

  15. Here is a list of Obama's executive desicions.

    1.
    2.
    3.
    4.
    5.

Here is a list of Obama's major US Senate accomplishments.

    1.
    2.
    3.
    4
    5.

When you find any of the above, then let know so that I can fill in it.

  16. Why that's mighty hypocritical of you to concern yourself with Obama's executive experience but give McCain a free ride...

LOL, you're collapsing in front of us. This is hilarious.

What about Lincoln, Nance? He didn't have an executive experience.

  17. Jfnance32, I asked you several times yesterday and I'll ask again today since she is going to be nominated for the second most powerful office in the White House in a few hours:

What is Sarah Palin's position on Iran?
What is Sarah Palin's position on North Korea?
What is Sarah Palin's position on the Russia/Georgia conflict?
What is Sarah Palin's position on Israel?
What is Sarah Palin's position on Syria?
What is Sarah Palin's position on Iraq?

Does it bother you that she said, ""I've been so focused on state government, I haven't really focused much on the war in Iraq."

We don't need another person (thanks, PatriciaLV) in the White House who is clueless about what's going on!

  18. I asked you several times yesterday and I'll ask again today since he is going to be nominated for the most powerful office in the White House.

What are Obama's major accomplishments as a US Senator?

Does Obama have significant foreign policy experience?

Does Obama have significant economny policy experience?

Does Obama have any significant executive experience?

Does it bother you that the top of ticket has no experience in much of anything?

Does it bother you that neither person on the Democratic ticket have any significant executive experience?

Does it bother you that Obama has a strong experience in having close ties to most corrupt South Chicago crook?

Does it bother you that Obama has no experience in reaching across the aisle against his party wishes to work on major issues?

Does it bother you that Obama never saw one corrupt person during his time working South Chicago politics?

Does it bother you that Obama never have been against a major issue within his own party? Good leadership there...

He had a close connection to one of the biggest crooks in South Chicago and he was clueless that he was a crook!

We don't need another person in the White House who is clueless about what's going on!

  19. Nance, your blathering about Obama's experience is hopeless. You've made it clear you support Palin without knowing more than the GOP talking points.

You couldn't even answer a question asking for five executive decisions made by McCain, so why should there be quid pro quo?

Apparently, you think running a tiny town into $22 million in debt is "executive experience."

Let me be the first to tell you, if she was an actual Executive, a C.E.O., she'd have been ran out of town ages ago.

You've yet to respond to ksand99's questions.

Apparently, the other day when you were stammering on about foreign policy at the DNC, it was all for show?

Yeah, like ksand said, just vote for the R.

To demand executive credentials of Obama but not of McCain is your double standard in action.

  20. Here's Obama list:

    Executive Experience: Zero

Fighthing his own party on a major issues: Zero

Reaching across the aisle against his party wishes on a major issues: Zero

Foreign Policy Experience: Not much...3 year part-time senator...7 year state senator

Economic Policy Experience: Not much...3 year part-time senator...7 year state senator

Part-Time US Senator Major Accomplishments: Nobody has given any

The only thing that I can think of that Obama has done is try to block a bill that would have given legal human rights to babies born from botched abortions.

Oh...I forgot he did give a speech once and he has been running for president for the last 3 years.

McCain has strong experience in standing up to his own party. He has a record of being a leader in passing major bills in the US Senate. He has a record reaching across the aisle on major issues.

McCain has years of experience in dealing with foreign policy and national economic issues.

Palin has good executive experience. She also has stood up to her own party. She also has reached across the aisle to work on major issues.

  21. Major accomplishments in the Senate?
570 bills introduced in two sessions.

Foreign policy experience? Here's are his Senate bills:
    Iraq war de-escalation (313)
    US policy for Iraq (433),
    Divestiture from Iran (1430)
    Sudan divestment authorization (831)
    Millennium Development Goals (2433)
    Multilateral debt relief (1320)
    Development bank reform (1129)
    Nuclear nonproliferation (3131,977,2224)

    Working across the aisle?
You mean the Lugar-Obama Nuclear Nonproliferation legislation signed into law by President Bush?

    Economic Policy?
You mean the one you've agreed will create less national debt than McCain?

  22. "Palin has good executive experience. She also has stood up to her own party. She also has reached across the aisle to work on major issues."

She created 22,000,000 in debt for the town she was mayor of!!! That's after she spend the 26,900,000 in earmarks she hired a lobbyist to get for Wasilla.

    That's HORRIBLE EXECUTIVE EXPERIENCE!

Sheesh, at this rate I think you'd prefer Enron CEO Jeffrey Skilling over Obama, just cause he ran a corporation!!!! LOL!!!!!!!!

  23. Obama has an excellent track record on executive decision making.

    Ooops...there is none.

Oh well...he has an excellect foreign policy experience.....ooops very little here and he changes his policies....sometimes in the same day!

  24. Nance's double standard, back in full force.

He criticized Obama for changing his policies.

But wait! Nance 100% supports McCain, who has changed his positions on:

The offshore drilling moratorium, windfall-profit tax, his own immigration legislation, his own campaign finance legislation, warrantless wiretapping, privatizing Social Security, protecting abortion rights in cases of rape and incest, the estate tax, indefinite detention of terror suspects, normalizing relations with Cuba, diplomacy with Hamas, diplomacy with Syria, waterboarding, the DREAM act, Roe v. Wade, gay marriage, Bush's tax cuts, ethanol, and the Confederate flag.

Oh Nance, the irony is delicious!

  25. "Obama has an excellent track record on executive decision making. Ooops...there is none."

As you have pointed out, neither does McCain.

  26. Jfnance32, how can you criticize Obama when you don't even know the foreign policy positions of the candidate you support?

What is Sarah Palin's position on Iran?
What is Sarah Palin's position on North Korea?
What is Sarah Palin's position on the Russia/Georgia conflict?
What is Sarah Palin's position on Israel?
What is Sarah Palin's position on Syria?
What is Sarah Palin's position on Iraq?

I'll take Obama's foreign policy knowledge and the respect for him by world leaders over the gigantic question mark of Sarah Palin any day!!!!!

  27. Using the flimsy "Executive Experience" arguments of Fnance and Futuro,McCain should be running for Vice President rather than President. He has zero "Executive" experience.
This discussion should not be about Palin but McCain and his embarassing selection of a running mate without careful vetting.Attempts to change the subject are funny but futile.

  28. To those trying to access Sarah Palin's website's history go to http://www.archive.org then search for palinforgovernor.com .

From her website archive at http://web.archive.org/web/2006050601424...

"Granted, my unapologetic passion for sports may play an exceptionable role in shaping my worldview, but I'm convinced the formula for success in the sports arena is essentially the same in the political arena. In fact, I believe all I ever really needed to know I learned on the basketball court."

This is NOT the way to handle international affairs. Foreign policy is not a game, peoples lives and livelihoods are at stake.

  29. Obama is a good example on to handle foreign affairs.

He annouces to the whole that he would attack soverign Pakistani territory without their permission. Pakistan is highly unstable country with a large extreme Mulism population and nuclear weapons. He basically told that the pro-USA goverment to go screw themselves. He shows excellent diplomatic skills there.

First he says Iran is not so great of a threat.

Now, he says Iran is a serious threat.

He wants Russia, Iran, China, Pakistan, India and Israel to destroy their nukes and not hide them and I guess have a magic device to detect that.

Obama changed his statements on troops in Iraq and Georgia in the same day.

Obama has been practicing his skills at foriegn policy for 3 years.

I think he needs some more practice.

  30. Nance, spreading you lies and talking points here as well, eh?

Obama said Iran is not a threat like the Soviet Union was. You intentionally leave that last part out, and have been destroyed on that before, but that's just a simple fact. You've even admitted that the U.S.S.R. could blow up the world in 21 minutes, but Iran doesn't have any kind of that capability.

It's comparing Mike Tyson to a welterweight.

He wants to re-engage the nuclear community in arms reduction and negotiations. I guess you think we should sit back and let the nukes spread.

Why don't you prove your "Obama changed his statements on troops in Georgia and Iraq in the same day." You've NEVER proven that statement.

Obama proved his foreign policy skills before the Iraq war, when he accurately predicted that it would be a disaster for the United States. That we would be mired there far longer than the Bush administration's predictions. That we were going to war for politics, not on evidence. And he was right.

He said he wants to continue hard diplomacy with enemy states like Iran, and will not take any option off the table when it comes to Iran.

He said, five years ago, that we needed to finish the job in Afghanistan and take out al Qaeda. That we were taking our eye off the ball. And now? Bush is scrambling to find troops to reinforce Afghanistan and sending cruise missiles into Pakistan.

On the major foreign policy issues of our times, he was right and the Bush administration was wrong.

That's exactly the type of foreign policy knowledge we need.

  31. Georiga:

In the morning, Obama statement was in line with Bushes statement which was more neutral with Russia.

    http://www.newshoggers.com/blog/2008/08/......

By the next day, Obama's statement was in line with McCain's statement which was more hawkish toward Russia.

He puts up his finger in the wind to make foreign policy.

    http://www.newshoggers.com/blog/2008/08/......

    Iran:

" mean think about it. Iran, Cuba, Venezuela, these countries are tiny compared to the Soviet Union. They don't pose a serious threat to us the way the Soviet Union posed a threat to us....You know, Iran, they spend one-one hundredth of what we spend on the military. If Iran ever tried to pose a serious threat to us, they wouldn't stand a chance."

Sounds to me that is down playing the threat.

    After:

"Iran is a grave threat. It has an illicit nuclear program. It supports terrorism across the region and militias in Iraq. It threatens Israel's existence."

Sounds to me that he is now enhancing the threat.

    Iraq:

Obama has campaigned on removing combat forces from Iraq within 16 months of taking office. But yesterday in Fargo, North Dakota, he told reporters: "I am going to do a thorough assessment when I'm there. I'm sure I'll have more information and continue to refine my policy."

Here are some other conflicting statements by Obama on Iraq.

“America cannot afford to withdraw immediately, said Obama, an early opponent of invading Iraq.
That would create more chaos in Iraq and make it "an extraordinary hotbed of terrorist activity," he said at a meeting of the Illinois News Broadcasters Association. It would also damage America's international prestige and amount to "a slap in the face" to the troops fighting there, he said.”

  32. Nukes:

“Obama will set a goal of a world without nuclear weapons, and pursue it.”

Obama is very naïve to think that Russia, India, Pakistan, China, Iran and Israel will destroy their nukes, and not expect anybody to hide some.

    Afghanistan:

Obama was in-charge of a sub-committee that oversaw NATO. Military operations in Afghanistan are ran by NATO. Obama never saw fit to have a meeting on Afghanistan.

Obama was part of a senate trip to the Middle East. The senators in their planned trip had a planned stop in Afghanistan. Obama decided that Afghanistan was not that important to visit and skipped that part of the trip.

    Pakistan:

Yes, Bush has attacked terrorist in Pakistan.
Bush has never said..."Screw you Pakistan, we are going to attack anytime we want to."

Obama announces to the whole world that US will attack and he could care less what Pakistan thinks about it. It is very boneheaded thing to do. It hurts our allies in the fragile Pakistani government. He really shows that he is a rookie. He needs to learn to be more diplomatic with his words. He could have said that they will be very aggressive in attacking terrorist camps in Pakistan. He did not have to mention that he would do it without Pakistan’s permission.

  33. Geez Nance, your historical knowledge is even more shallow that your knowledge of Palin's positions!

He's SPOT ON with Iran and you know it. Iran isn't nearly the threat that the USSR posed. And apparently, you disagree with him! I've seen you feebly attempt the counterpoint to that, but I'm glad to see you've completely given up trying to convince the opposite.

He's SPOT ON with Georgia and Russia and you know it. He made some statements, the Russians escalated the crisis and he, SMARTLY, altered his language. DUH!

He's SPOT ON with Iraq. He has ALWAYS said withdrawal will be done in concert with the conditions on the ground. You have NOTHING here.

He's SPOT ON with nuclear arms talks. I guess you thought it was naieve of Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton and Bush to enter into arms treaties with the USSR/Russia. What a joke. You need a little history lesson. Start with SALT I, SALT II and START and the NNPT!

He's SPOT ON with Afghanistan, making the case FIVE YEARS AGO that we shouldn't divert attention from Afghanistan and al Qaeda. And what happened? We lost control of key parts of Afghanistan and al Quaeda can now traipse back and forth between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

He announced that he would take action if he had actionable intelligence on al Qaeda targets in Pakistan. That's the right stand. McCain called that stand "naieve," even though Bush has been lobbying cruise missles over there for YEARS.

Naieve? That's ridiculous. What is McCain gonna do? Wait for them to strike again? Is that why TIME asked why McCain was being "Weak on Al Qaeda?"

You failed on EVERY ONE of these points.

    Try again.

  34. For those simple questions here are the very simple answers

What is Sarah Palin's position on Iran?
    Enemy

What is Sarah Palin's position on Israel?
    Supports Friend

What is Sarhah Palin's position on Syria?
    Enemy

What is Sarah Palin's position on North Korea? Enemy

What is Sarah Palin's position on the Russia/Georgia conflict?
Russia is the enemy and Supports Friend Georgia

What is Sarah Palin's position on Iraq?
    Win and leave

  35. Obama notoriously claims that he would not have voted for the “dumb” Iraq war based on unclassified information in the NY Times.

Obama did not participate in the actionable decision at 2:00 a.m. on October 11, 2002, when the Senate was called on to vote as to whether to authorize President Bush to invade Iraq.

Democrats and McCain made that decision based on the available Classified Intelligence.

On 6-5-2008, the Democratic Senate Intelligence committee came out and in a 171 page report and confirmed that Bush administration and Congressional statements on Iraq WMD were backed up by available (but flawed) U.S intelligence.

  36. Earth to Fnance, some of our troops go into Pakistan from Afganistan on an almost daily basis.Unfortunately,we don't have enough of them in Afganistan to get the job done.
Who asked for an increase in troop levels in Afganistan?McCain.Nah.Obama!!

  37. Future2012, it's really, really sad that you're left GUESSING the positions of the VP pick of your party.

But those are deep, insightful positions on the most important issues of the day. "Enemy" "Supports friend." LOL.

She considers Russia an "enemy?" Is she going to attack them if she becomes President?

LOL, you Republicans and your blank slate candidates!

Would you mind pointing me to some of her public statements of those positions, Future2012?

    Thanks.

  38. Listen tonight and learn

  39. So she's going to accept the nomination, and then lay out her positions?

Don't you think that a little bit backwards?

  40. "So she's going to accept the nomination, and then lay out her positions?

Don't you think that a little bit backwards?"

    She'll rock the house tonight!

You are and have been backwards, thinking your losses / butt-whippings are wins; Masochist.

  41. Oh Makz, still can't play nice, I see?

    More deleted comments?

Can't name a single position of your Veep pick?

    Carpet-bombing McCain's legislative record?

You, my friend, are on quite a roll today.

  42. She spent the first ten minutes talking about her offspring.

Ten minutes in, not a single policy statement.

    NO Economic Policy
    NO Foreign Policy
    NO Homeland Security

Is this woman delusional? McCain stands up to lobbyists? Lobbyists make up almost the MAJORITY of McCain's campaign! The CAMPAIGN MANAGER FOR JOHN MCCAIN IS A LOBBYIST. LOLOLOL!!!!

Rather than give us policy and substance, she gives us cattiness and fluff.

She gave us pissy AM talk-radio talking points and wanted everyone to clap for McCain.

This was not the speech of a great woman. This was the speech of someone desperately insecure.

She should have watched Carly Fiorina and Meg Whitman. Those were two competent, amazing businesspeople.

    Wow, how embarassing!!!!

  43. Palins speech was red meat for the GOP base. Most others were probably not impressed. If anyone was waiting for anything demonstrating any knowledge of foreign policy, they are still waiting.
Waiting for her social and economic views?Still waiting.
Lets see how she does without a teleprompter.

  44. Yes, Palin did so bad that the Democrats should go on vacation. They can now just to do a cake walk to election.

    So to sleep Dems.

  45. Yes, when given an opportunity to tell us what she would contribute as the Vice President, she gave us snide remarks about presidential seals and foam core.

How are the Republicans going to make our lives better? Don't ask her, she hasn't a clue!

  46. Sarah GAME ON

  47. Ok, Nance, future and others... let's make this perfectly simple:

    1. Do you support the idea of a state seceding from the US? Yes or no.

    2. Do you believe that Armageddon is approaching, and that the best way to speed it along is to empty our Nuclear arsenal upon others? Yes or no

Even you are smart enough to answer two simple questions-or are you just going to avoid/evade/spin/redirect/vilify/lie/demonize.

Real simple: answer or shut the heck up, until you cea find at least one or two REAL facts, and not the junk that obviously you are unable to produce yourself, since I hear your exact words parroted by pundits before you get a chance to write them here (Can we say lack of individual thought?)

    Put up or shut up

  48. If this is all the Reps can come up with, a squeaky voiced woman from some hick town in Alaska, a woman who has extreme life values, yet allows her daughter to have sex at the age of 16, I mean, what kind of values has this woman, who "could" be there with her finger on that button, the mind boggles at such a thought

  49. I think this Democratic obession with a VP pick is amazing.

I think the Democrats are talking more about Palin then their own candidate now.

I do not have a problem with it.

I think Republicans spent two seconds on Biden. Biden is not important factor in this race. It is funny. Biden's selection was offically release in a 3:00 AM text message. Democrats know how to throw a big party for their VP. Nobody remembers anything that Biden says or cares what Biden is doing.

I guess the little mother from a small town has that effect on Democrats.

    It has driven them nuts!

  50. I have no clue what cmon is talking about.

Is he talking about the US civil war?

    Or a Bruce Willis movie?

  51. If this is all the Dems can come up with, a big ear man whose core fundraiser for years is the biggest South Chicago convicted crook, a man who has extreme abortion rights values that he was the sole vote against a bill that would have given legal human rights to babies born from botched abortions, I mean, what kind of values has this man, who "could" be there with his finger on that button, the mind boggles at such a thought

  52. Democrats, please as much as often use the following words in negative tone.......small town, hick, backward, small states, blue collar, mother, woman, squeaky voice woman, girl, no-substance, bitter folk, creationists, religion, God believing, gun lovers, hunters.

Anything that puts down women, motherhood, small town america gets bonus points.

Also, we greatly appreciate all the negative messages about Palin.

Please, please keep up the attacks.

    Thank you, the Republicans

PS You are doing a great job.

  53. Hey guys, quit trying to make sense out of jfnance. He's like those little boys who sit in the dirt with his arms crossed saying over and over, "I won't go to school, I won't, I won't, I WON'T!!! Parental malpractise is rampant, unfortunately.

  54. Excellent, smart, intelligent posting by CarsonNewshound......

I might be willing to pay you money just to walk around and tell voters what you think and be sure to say that you support Obama.
