Wildcats finish undefeated in division

Las Vegas High School closed the regular season Thursday night with a 52-15 victory against visiting Eldorado.

Las Vegas coach Chris Faircloth said his team had one of its better performances of the year. The Wildcats went undefeated in the Northeast Division, but several victories were plagued by penalties and other mistakes, he said.

“It’s clicking pretty good right now,” the coach said. “We’ve been grinding them pretty hard in practice and the hard is starting to show.”

Las Vegas opens the Sunrise Regional playoffs Nov. 7 by hosting Foothill, the No. 4 seed from the Southeast Division. The Wildcats have won five straight region crowns, also capturing the large-school title in 2005 and ‘06.

“Foothill is a real physical team,” Faircloth said. “We see a lot of speed running backs in our league, and they have a real tough back (Algeron Sewell)."

Arbor View gets by Shadow Ridge

Arbor View pulled off a final win of the season over Shadow Ridge, ending the Aggies' first winning season in the school's four years.

The two schools ended their seasons with a rivalry game. The original Arbor View team came from Shadow Ridge when the new school opened.

"It's the kids-next-door kind of thing for us," Arbor View coach Dan Barnson said. "It's the biggest rival we have."

Friday's 36-27 win was the sixth for Arbor View and the eighth loss of the year for Shadow Ridge.

"It was pretty much an offensive battle," Barnson said. "Both teams moved the ball."

Shadow Ridge coach Gabe Gledhill agreed that offense was key in the game.

"Their offense is a tough offense to stop," he said. "We were outsized, our kids fought and did a good job, but we came up short."

Arbor View sophomore Taylor Wooten rushed for 186 yards in the game, pushing his season total to more than 1,400 yards.

Clark wins last home game

The Chargers defeated the Warriors at home, 40-20, Friday night.

The game was close starting out, but Clark took control during the second half. Two star running backs made the game and the season for the Chargers. Junior Andre Clay and senior Aaron Arlt each rushed for more than 100 yards during the game and more than 1,000 yards each during the season.

Western’s head coach, John Isola, said poor officiating was a factor.

"There were so many personal fouls called on our team," he said. “Our kid got ejected from the game for pulling the other kid’s leg, but what the ref didn’t see was the other kid grabbing our kid’s face mask and slamming him down on the ground. The film doesn’t lie.”

Despite a rough game tonight, Isola said it was a good season for such a young team and that eight offensive and eight defensive players will be returning next year.

Spring Valley beat Durango, 58-7

Spring Valley finished its season with an easy win against Durango, 58-7, Friday night.

“We came out and executed the right way and shut down their offense,” Grizzlies head coach Kelly Murphy said. “We did really well this season. I’m very proud of my team going 8-1. now playoff season starts and we need to see how we’re going to shake it out.”

Durango head coach Gary A. Maki said his team struggled against Spring Valley.

“We lost to a very good team,” he said. “We’re younger and our inexperience showed through tonight.”

Maki said he is looking forward to next year and hoping for a good season because 19 starters will be returning to the Trailblazers.

Sierra Vista tops Pahrump Valley

Pahrump Valley lost to Sierra Vista, 40-10, in its final game on the season.

Pahrump senior running back Ande Floyd rushed for 110 yards, which head coach Leo Verzilli said was the highlight of the game. Junior Gary Walker kicked a 43-yard field goal, the first of the season for Pahrump.

Senior running back Gueran Fenicle scored Pahrump’s only touchdown for the night.

Overall, Verzilli said the season was disappointing.

“This was the first year we played in 4A. We thought we might be able to steal a couple games but it didn’t pan out that way,” he said.

Pahrump finished the season with an 0-9 record. Sierra Vista will advance to the playoffs next week.

Centennial stomps Mojave

Centennial sophomore Brandon Wright ran all over the Rattlers as his 300 yard performance lifted Centennial to an easy 48-6 victory.

"We had a hard time moving the ball," said Mojave coach Tyrone Armstrong. "They capitalized on two punt returns and it was downhill from there."
