McCarran traffic falls 13 percent in September

Monday, Oct. 27, 2008 | 4:20 p.m.

Passenger traffic at McCarran International Airport plummeted 13.2 percent in September, the first month that US Airways’ big capacity cuts were reflected at Las Vegas’ airport.

McCarran reported 3.4 million passengers in September. It was the steepest percentage decline since the post-9/11 era, overshadowing August’s 9.9 percent decrease from August 2007.

McCarran had a 14.5 percent decrease in traffic in December 2001, three months after the destruction of the World Trade Center.

US Airways, which abandoned its night-hub operation at McCarran in September and is headed toward reducing its flight capacity by half by the end of the year, had 30.6 percent fewer passengers last month than in September 2007.

The September swoon brought the nine-month passenger total to 34.1 million, 5.7 percent below the nine-month total a year earlier.

  1. Just close your eyes and say "Vegas is recession - proof. Vegas is recession - proof. Vegas is recession - proof." and it will all get better.

Volume is decreasing at an INCREASING rate.

Tourism is all we got here, folks. We need research and tech jobs, not another locals casino.
