Beyond the Sun
John Grogan became part of American pop culture with his first book, “Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World’s Worst Dog.” A movie version arrives in theaters this Christmas.
The bestseller about life with his 97-pound Labrador retriever spawned offshoots aimed at children, even the illustrated “A Very Marley Christmas.”
Grogan’s new memoir is about growing up Catholic. “The Longest Trip Home” comes out this week.
The author gives a free talk at 1 p.m. Sunday in the Henderson Pavilion as part of the One Book Henderson program, which aims to connect residents by sharing a reading experience.
When did you know “Marley & Me” resonated with a very large audience?
I didn’t think it would be a huge audience. Before it came out, reviewers started reading it and there started to be a little bit of a buzz. I started getting some signals. When it debuted on The New York Times Best Sellers list and stayed there for 74 weeks, it was amazing.
Does Marley the dog make an appearance in your new book?
Yes. It’s kind of a prequel and sequel to “Marley and Me.” It goes from when I’m 6 to when I’m 46. It’s about finding your own place and own person.
Who played Marley in the movie?
They found 25 dogs, all Labs they trained to do different things to mimic Marley’s manic behavior.
What did you think of Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston playing you and your wife?
He doesn’t look anything like me. But he did a great job. My wife even said he acted like me. My wife was not disappointed to have someone beautiful play her.
How has the transition been from reporter to interview subject?
It’s been interesting. At first I was used to being a journalist and being the interviewer. I continued to work at The Philadelphia Inquirer through February 2007. So I was still there for most of the “Marley and Me” ride. For the most part the journalists have been professional.
Do you miss the newsroom at all?
Not really. I keep really busy between writing and book tours and promoting. I’m working harder than I ever did.
