AT&T to bring 350 call center jobs to Las Vegas
Company retrieving some outsourced jobs
Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008 | 2:53 p.m.
AT&T opened a High Speed Internet Technical Support Center on West Charleston Boulevard and Towne Square today.
The center will employ 80 people initially, with plans to gradually grow the staff to 350 people by June, 2009.
The jobs are among 5,000 AT&T positions that were initially outsourced - many of them overseas – that are being brought back in-house.
The center will function as a call center to assist AT&T High Speed Internet subscribers on a broad spectrum of questions related to the service.

Great news? $12 hour jobs?
AT&T realized that with the dollar at an all time low they could hire americans for less than third world; well educated, english speaking individuals for.
At&T was having trouble in India with the work force because no on could take the majority of calls that pressed #2.
If we raise corporate taxes and mandate a universal health care system those jobs will leave before they are filled.
As long as they're not telemarketers........and welcome to the real world - $12.00 hr. for a whole lot of people is the norm. Not everyone was blessed with the opportunity to go to college.
I never went to college, but made made more than $12 when I just got out of high school, 18 years ago. You will make a great roommate for somebody, if you make less than $20 an hour, or own your home outright already.
I work for a MAJOR credit card company.. and this company is bringing back all it's India call center jobs... WHY? Cause no one can understand a dam word and needless to say that does not make for happy customers especially in this current market. BUT, higher paying positions in FRAUD are being shifted to India in the call center's place. Cheaper labor/cost of living and sorry to say domestic laziness within these positions are to blame. Funny, the oldest established credit card company in AMERICA will have it's fraud claims handled in INDIA, now how do you like those apples?
Hooverdam, what kind of work did you do 18 yrs. ago with nothing but a high school education? Please share - I'd like to look into that same field if possible - I can only imagine what it pays now, 18 yrs. later -
Between my husband and myself we average around $32.00 hr. - have no credit cards at all - only one car payment ($500 mo.) and rent of $1200.00. and yet with the cost of health insurance, auto insurance, cell phone, cable/internet, utilities and food we find ourselves living paycheck to paycheck - and believe me we do not do 'extravagence' at all - no casino's - no hbo, showtime etc. and the slowest of cable modem speeds - it's the taxes and what-nots (every living expenses) that eat up the paycheck to the point where $32.00 hr. isn't much at all.
So instead of having to speak with un-intelligble people in India we can look forward to speaking with operators who know little or no English at all. At least the Hispanic group will get better service.
I am indeed happy that AT&T is bringing the jobs back, and strongly support such action. But I doubt there will be much improvement in the ability to serve customers who speak English.
I am single no children and make $31.50 an hour and I live pay check to paycheck. I have no idea how any survives off $12.00 these days.
I am english guy who is married. I was laid off from my job 5 weeks ago.I work in banking and it is very difficult to get a new job. There are very little jobs out there.
I have had 2 interviews in the last 5 weeks.New employers see that there is many jobless people are paying bottom dollar. Another 2 months and we may be homeless.
I am hoping to see some light at the end of the tunnel soon.
Regarding the $12.00 hr pay at the new ATT Call Center, that's considered "good money" for Las Vegas. Some call centers pay less than $12.00. Companies locate here because of no State Tax and low business taxes. Although they save money they do not pass it on in higher wages because they feel that since we do no pay a State Income then they should pay a lower salaries.
Most jobs in Las Vegas are NOT well paying jobs.
I've been here 12 years and have not come close to makeing what I made in 1991 which was $30,000 as an Administrative Assistant with no college degree in Los Angeles.
Las Vegas dirty little secret is that they lure people here with the notion that with all this money flowing on the strip, everyone must be getting paid well. But if it were not for Tip Income subsidizing most paychecks, and people working 2 jobs most people could not afford to live here.
Yes, Las Vegas Loves a Loser.....that could be the slogan here.
But I have to diagree that non-College types can't do well for themselves here. I fit that catagory..(High school drop out to boot) and I make $80 to $125 and hour billing myself out as a consultant here, with telecom skills I picked up along the way. Some people can do the formal school thing, others can't. Should not stop you from being intelligent and attractive (in the sense that employers (or clients) are attracted to your skillset)
IMHO
