Man accused of child sex crimes agrees to plea deal

Monday, Oct. 13, 2008 | 7:19 p.m.

A man accused of sex crimes involving two children under the age of 14 agreed to a plea deal Monday that would bring him between eight and 20 years in prison.

Robin Newberg, 35, had faced two counts of sexually assaulting a victim under 14 and eight charges of lewdness with a minor under 14. Charges of using a minor in production of pornography were previously dropped.

Before District Court Judge James Bixler, Newberg pleaded guilty to one count of attempted sexual assault of a minor under 14 and two counts of attempted lewdness with a child under 14. The assault charge carries an eight- to 20-year sentence and the lewdness charges carry concurrent two- to five-year sentences. The agreement also called for lifetime registration as a sex offender.

“I think it’s a fair resolution to the case,” Chief Deputy District Attorney James Sweetin said. “Based on everything, I think it was a reasonable negotiation.”

A chief concern, he said, was having the young witnesses testify during a trial. He said he had consulted the victim’s family about the deal.

Two siblings had testified during the case’s preliminary hearing that Newberg repeatedly touched them inappropriately and snapped photos of them with a cell phone between February and July, 2007. Newberg was living with them at the time as the boyfriend of their mother.

Bixler asked Newberg if he was guilty of each charge after he read a description of each count into the record. Newberg answered yes.

Newberg is scheduled to be sentenced at noon Dec. 15.
