Liberty runners reach milestone
Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008 | midnight
The Liberty girls cross country picked up their first win at a home meet in the school's six-year history on Sept. 26.
Liberty coach Harold Vaughn said the team has hosted limited meets, but still felt like a hurdle had been cleared in their 28-27 win over Silverado.
"It was a real good meet for us and a big step for the girls," Vaughn said. "Silverado is always a very good team, so to get a win over them, you know it was a tough win. We're hoping we can keep that momentum going now."
Sophomore Joslyn Evans led the way for the Patriots, taking first in 20 minutes, 46 seconds on the 3.1-mile course. She was followed by teammates Paige Terlizzi, Courtney Chin, Jackie Puno and Erika Turner.
The boys team took third in their meet on the same day, finishing with 37 points behind Silverado (51) and Boulder City High (38).
Liberty junior Al Galan took first in 16:22.
Silverado boys soccer rallies past Liberty
The Silverado boys soccer team moved to 4-4-1 on the season and 3-2-1 in the Southeast Division with a 6-1 victory against Liberty on Sept. 26.
Silverado coach John Cwik said the win came at a good time for the Skyhawks who have lost a number of close games this year.
"We gave up a few close games in a row and you can't do that in a division race that's as tightly bunched as this one," Cwik said. "You've got to win those games. Right now we're fifth in the Southeast, which means we're on the outside looking in. We need to find a way to get into that fourth spot."
After falling behind 1-0 in the first half, the 'Hawks rallied with goals from Gary Diego and Kyle Melles and two each from Devin Diego and Chase Leaders.
"Gary Diego has really been leading the way for us," Cwik said. "He's having a big year and he sets a great example that's more than any coach could ask for. Melles is another one who's come up big for us on defense."
Liberty girls volleyball seek first win in division
The Liberty girls volleyball team is still looking for its first Southeast Division win after a narrow 3-2 loss to Foothill on Sept. 24.
The setback dropped the Patriots to 2-5 on the season and 0-4 in league play, but Liberty coach Casey Rohrick said she's seen signs of improvement.
"The team has been struggling for the most part," Rohrick said. "We're still taking things one game at a time and learning to play as a team."
The Patriots alternated sets against the Falcons losing the first 25-18 before winning the second 25-12. The Patriots then lost the third 26-24 before winning the fourth 25-19 and losing the fifth 15-13.
The coach said sophomore outside hitter Amanda Delgado and junior Phoebe Baker have led the team.
