Fire damages home in northwest valley

Firefighters are trying to determine the cause of a blaze that started Sunday in a northwest Las Vegas Valley home.

Las Vegas Fire and Rescue responded just before noon to the home at 10452 Concetta Ave., which is near Alexander Road's intersection with the 215 Beltway. No one was home at the time and no one was injured.

Neighbors reported the fire, and firefighters arrived to find smoke showing from an upstairs bedroom and a mattress smoldering. The fire started at or near the bed, but the cause of the blaze hadn't been determined Sunday evening, investigators said.

The fire was confined to the bedroom of the stucco home, although much of the second floor sustained smoke damage. Damage was estimated at $50,000.

The American Red Cross was called to assist the family. A ferret died, but a dog and a tarantula survived.
