Foundation accepting grant proposals

The Henderson Community Foundation has announced the availability of a competitive grant of up to $2,500 for a volunteer program that expands the reach of a nonprofit organization.

Applications must be submitted by Dec. 8 for an award period of Dec. 31 to June 30.

Organizations must be based in Henderson or serve the Henderson community and must qualify as tax exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS tax code.

Local groups invited to be part of parade

The city is inviting local bands, organizations, groups, businesses and individuals to participate in the annual WinterFest Parade Dec. 13 in downtown Henderson.

The theme is Toys on Parade. The U.S. Marine Corps will serve as the honorary grand marshals.

Cash prizes totaling $2,000 will be awarded for entries in three different categories: best overall theme, best costume and best group. Entry is free.

Cleaners, Dunkin Donuts collect toys

Village East Cleaners will be accepting toys, books and cash donations to benefit the children of St. Jude's Ranch for Children in Boulder City this holiday season starting Nov. 28.

New, unwrapped toys and gently used books may be dropped of at Village East's two locations, 1760 W. Horizon Ridge Parkway and 11041 S. Eastern Ave.

In addition, all Dunkin' Donuts locations in Southern Nevada will be drop-off locations for Aid for AIDS of Nevada's annual holiday toy drive.

New, unwrapped toys for children ages 17 and younger may be dropped off until Dec. 8 at any Dunkin' Donuts location. The toys will be distributed on Dec. 18 and 19.

Henderson Libraries to hold job fairs

The Henderson District Public Libraries will host two job fairs to hire primarily for positions at the Green Valley Library from 1 to 5 p.m. Dec. 6 and from 5 to 9 p.m. Dec. 11 at the Paseo Verde Library, 280 S. Green Valley Parkway.

Henderson Libraries will acquire the Green Valley Library from the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District on Jan. 1. The Green Valley Library will undergo renovation and reopen in spring 2009.

County seeks stories of longtime residents

Clark County is seeking personal stories from county residents and visitors to post on its county centennial Web site.

Stories that include memories of significant events, places and people in the past that have added to the flavor of county history, both the urban valley and rural communities. The stories can be first person accounts or about others.

Stories can be submitted at www.AccessClarkCounty.com and click on the Centennial link. It is recommended that submissions be kept to 500 words or fewer.

Health fair to showcase community services

The Center for Behavioral Health is sponsoring a health fair, Operation SOS, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 10 at Heads-Up Guidance and Wellness Center, 340 N. 11th. St., Las Vegas.

The Strategic Outreach Services fair is meant to provide community information and direct services to needy families in Las Vegas. Vendors will provide information about programs and services in the community available to those in need of assistance.

The Heads-Up facility is fully equipped with conference rooms, treatment rooms, tables and chairs for vendors to display information.
