City of Las Vegas officials announced Thursday that Las Vegas City Manager Douglas A. Selby has announced his resignation, citing a desire to pursue other options.

“I have been city manager for more than six years, which is a very long time for a position like this,” Selby said. “It has been an honor to serve the city and I am very proud of our many accomplishments, but feel the need to do other work at this stage of my life.”

Selby will vacate the office in January 2009.

He has been city manager for the city of Las Vegas since August 2002. Prior to that Selby served as one of the deputy city mangers beginning in 1999. He says he has no immediate plans to take another job.

Mayor Oscar Goodman praised Selby’s nearly 10 years of service, saying “Doug has been the consummate city manager. I believe he has helped bring the city to a higher level of excellence, and he will be greatly missed.”

Under Selby's tenure, Las Vegas was named the American City of the Year by the World Leadership Forum in 2007.

Selby has also been credited for overseeing the city's staff as Las Vegas experienced the most unprecedented growth in its history.
