Jodi Picoult's "19 Minutes" will take the place of 2008's "Marley and Me" for Henderson One Book 2009, starting next October.
The One Book Committee chose the book based on recommendations from library employees.
Committee member Laurie Orton said the book will be great for One Book because it discusses difficult and complex issues. "This book will make for good discussions among readers," Orton said.
The book was also chosen over other possibilities because of the recognizable name of the author.
"Picoult is very popular among book groups. We wanted something that people are familiar with," Orton said.
"19 Minutes" is a fictional story of a small town high-school shooting set in Sterling, N.H. A 17-year-old kills nine students and one teacher in the span of 19 minutes after being the victim of bullying since kindergarten.
Picoult blurs the lines between right and wrong and attempts to show all sides of the story.
Henderson One Book is an adult program that reaches out to high schools as well. Orton cautions "19 Minutes" is not a book for middle and elementary schoolchildren.
The Henderson Libraries will be giving out free pass-along copies to those who sign up for the adult summer reading programs in June.
