Crash kills 88-year-old woman, injures four others

An 88-year-old woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash Saturday morning in the western Las Vegas Valley.
Metro Police responded at 10:17 a.m. to the crash at the intersection of West Charleston Boulevard and North Durango Drive.
Investigators said a 2003 Toyota Echo was eastbound on Charleston turning left to go north on Durango with a permissive green left-turn signal. The Echo turned in front of a westbound 2004 Chevrolet Silverado truck, police said.
Authorities said the driver of the Silverado wasn't able to stop in time, causing the truck to collide with the passenger's side of the Echo. Four occupants of the Echo and the driver of the Silverado were taken to University Medical Center's trauma unit, where the right-rear passenger of the car died shortly after arriving. She was identified as Shirley Oi, 88, of Las Vegas.
Three other occupants of the vehicle -- the driver, Audrey Oi, 57, of Las Vegas, and passengers Matthew Oi, 19, of Los Altos, Calif., and Cathy Oi, 54, of San Francisco -- received minor injuries. The driver of the Silverado, Javier Ascasibar, 64, of Las Vegas, also suffered minor injuries.
The collision remains under investigation. This is the 100th fatal crash this year in Metro Police jurisdiction.
