LETTER TO THE EDITOR:
Gold Butte deserves federal protection
Mon, Jun 9, 2008 (2:02 a.m.)
Thanks to the Las Vegas Sun for its May 31 editorial about protecting Utah’s native rock art that is threatened by oil and gas leasing.
Here in Southern Nevada we have our own special place full of rich cultural resources, including probably over 1,000 petroglyphs. This area is Gold Butte out by Mesquite and, like the Nine Mile Canyon, it also faces a looming threat, but in Gold Butte it is from irresponsible off-road vehicle users.
If the off-road abuse continues to destroy the beauty of the area, there will not be much for families to come and enjoy the nature that it has. Just as Nine Mile Canyon deserves protection, so does Gold Butte.
Having Gold Butte designated as a National Conservation Area with Wilderness is the best way to protect these rich cultural resources while balancing the needs of the people who enjoy the area.
