The Las Vegas City Council today unanimously approved Planning Commissioner David W. Steinman to fill the Ward 4 council seat of outgoing Councilman Larry Brown on an interim or “caretaker” basis.

“It’s an honor to follow Councilman Brown, and I’m going to do the job and make sure that the Ward 4 residents are represented to the best of my abilities,” Steinman said.

Commissioner Steinman will be officially sworn in as the interim Ward 4 councilman on Jan. 7, and will serve in the position until a new council member is selected in the upcoming 2009 Municipal Elections.

The Primary Election is scheduled for April 7, and the General Election is scheduled for June 2.

If a candidate gets more than 50 percent of the vote in the primary, they will be declared the winner and a general election in the ward will not be necessary. If no candidate receives 50 percent of the vote, however, the top two vote getters in the primary will square of in the general election.

In accepting the position Steinman has agreed not to seek the council seat in the election.

Steinman, 68, was appointed to the Planning Commission in 2004 by Councilman Brown, who was elected to the Clark County Commission on Nov. 4, 2008.

Steinman, originally from Ohio, previously served as a City Councilman and Planning Commissioner in Worthington, Ohio.
