Steinman to fill vacant Las Vegas City Council seat on interim basis

Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2008 | 11:39 a.m.

The Las Vegas City Council today appointed Sun City Summerlin resident David Steinman to fill City Councilman Larry Brown's Ward 4 seat beginning Jan. 7.

In Sun City, Steinman is member of the board of directors for the Sun City Summerlin Community Association, the governing body for the large 7,781-home retirement community.

Because of term limits, Brown ran and won election to the Clark County Commission in November. He officially vacates his city position on Jan. 4 and will be sworn in to the county post on Jan. 6.

Steinman will be sworn in on Jan. 7 and will serve only until someone is elected either in the March primary or, if no one receives enough votes, the June general election.

As a caretaker of the open seat, Steinman will have full authority of a council member -- but he agreed not to run for the seat in the upcoming election.

Because he is joining the City Council, Steinman is resigning from the Las Vegas Planning Commission.

Steinman said that after his term on the Council he would like to return to his seat on the city Planning Commission. That seat could be filled temporarily or could remain vacant until the next elected council member will be able to appoint someone.
