1 killed, 2 critically injured in crash

Sat, Dec 13, 2008 (12:32 p.m.)

A man was killed and two people were critically injured this morning after an SUV collided with a car that didn't stop for a red light in the western Las Vegas Valley, Metro Police said.

Authorities responded at 3:18 a.m. to the crash at the intersection of Rainbow Boulevard and Spring Mountain Road. Police said a 2003 BMW Z4 traveling west on Spring Mountain failed to stop for a red traffic signal and entered the intersection, colliding with a 2002 Nissan Xterra that was northbound on Rainbow Road.

The driver of the BMW and the driver and a passenger in the Nissan were ejected as the front of the Nissan struck the left side of the BMW. No one was wearing a seat belt, police said.

The driver of the Nissan, identified only as a 31-year-old Las Vegas man, was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the Nissan, Esther San-Pedro-Martin, 19, of Las Vegas, and the driver of the BMW, William Bierlein, 36, of Henderson, were taken to University Medical Center in critical condition, police said.

Investigators said speed and the BMW's failure to stop for a red light were factors in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation by the Metro Police Accident Investigation Detail. This is the 109th traffic fatality this year in Metro Police jurisdiction.

  1. That's what I'm sayin', William. Seems that it's too dangerous to drive sober in Vegas.

  2. "...speed and the BMW's failure to stop for a red light were factors in the crash..."

Guys, where does the story mention alcohol?

  3. "good thing there wasn't a bus stop nearby with sober riders"

  4. Alot of people with alot to say, not surprising!!!!! It's great that so many people are quick to jump to the conclusion that drugs or alcohol were involved. Would it be such a bad idea to wait for a follow up story before you start making your own thoeries about what happened? You people don't know this guy from Adam. Maybe he works two jobs to provide a better life for his family. There are many factors that could have played into this man running a traffic signal. I see it daily on the short trip I take to work. I guess its no big deal until somebody loses their life. We all have a lesson to learn from this tragedy. WEAR YOUR SEATBELT!!!!

  6. I would ask that the management of the LV Sun website consider making the viewing of Reader Comments optional. Just add a link or something. I find it counterintuitive to the purpose of journalism to allow relatively anonymous commentary most often without basis in fact to be presented immediately alongside reporting.

  7. AGAIN, Ive read everything I can find on this matter and NOWHERE has it mentioned alcohol. Please stop jumping to conclusions.

Because you have self-control whatsoever? Sorry, put the mouse down and back-away from your computer. You should not have one.
