WinterFest offers family fun

Highlights of this year's Winterfest at the Henderson Events Plaza will include two free productions of "A Christmas Carol," a performance by the Henderson Symphony Orchestra and a parade.

City of Henderson cultural supervisor Annette Mullins said many of the activities will appeal to children, including pony rides, a snow area and ice skating.

"It's just a great weekend of family entertainment," she said, while highlighting its low cost.

Festivities begin at 7 p.m., Dec. 11 with a free performance of "Messiah" by the Henderson Symphony Orchestra at the Henderson Convention Center. Local choirs will provide the vocal muscle power.

The following night features the official lighting of the tree at 6 p.m. by Mayor James B. Gibson. In addition to Santa, activities will continue until 9 p.m. with a petting zoo, ice skating and community group performances. Gingerbread house viewing and a Toys for Tots collection box will be located in the Convention Center lobby.

Mullins said Saturday's events begin at 10 a.m. with the "Toys on Parade."

"As soon as the parade is over we'll have 75 craft vendors," Mullins said. "You can do your last-minute shopping at the fair."

Throughout the day, there will be activities for children, including the pony rides and snow play area. Following a series of musical performances, "A Christmas Carol" will be performed at 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. at the Events Plaza Stage.

Mullins expected 8,000 people to attend throughout the weekend.
