Pedestrian critically injured in collision with car

A 44-year-old woman was critically injured late Tuesday when a vehicle struck her as she was trying to walk across Maryland Parkway.

Metro Police responded at 10:38 p.m. to the crash on Maryland just south of the road's intersection with Lulu Avenue, which is near Tropicana Avenue.

Investigators said evidence and witness statements indicate a 2000 Mazda was northbound on Maryland in the left of three northbound travel lanes. The pedestrian, Monica Travis, whose address wasn't available this morning, was trying to cross the road from west to east outside of a marked crosswalk, police said.

Travis entered the left northbound lane and was struck by the front of the Mazda. She was taken to Sunrise Hospital in critical condition, authorities said.

Police said the crash occurred as a result of "pedestrian error." The driver, Jose Menedez-Guitierrez, 35, of Las Vegas, wasn't injured.

The Metro Police Accident Investigation Detail is investigating the crash.
