Letter: Just who are the reckless spenders?

In his latest book, "The Age of Turbulence: Adventures in a New World," Alan Greenspan bemoans the massive deficits run up by this White House. We taxpayers can only bemoan the fact that Greenspan waited too long to voice his displeasure.

Given the details of our enormous federal debt, it is startling to learn from The New Yorker magazine that a full 75 percent of that debt has been implemented during the reign of three Republican presidents: two terms of Ronald Reagan; one term of George H.W. Bush and nearly seven years of the present White House.

With the fact that President Bill Clinton left a budget surplus, it follows that the oft heard refrain of " tax and spend Democrats" has zero credibility.

Perhaps a new more credible refrain could be crafted, such as "reckless spending Republicans!"
