Letter: McCain is above all a man of character

I read with much interest and a great deal of agreement a column by David Brooks that appeared in the Nov. 14 issue of the Las Vegas Sun.

To quote Mr. Brooks on several points regarding John McCain: "I can tell you there is nobody in politics remotely like him ... He still fights a daily battle against the soul-destroying forms of modern politics.

"Telling the truth is a skill. Those who don't do it habitually lose the ability, but McCain is well-practiced and has the capacity to face unpleasant truths.

"Character is destiny, and you will never convince me that he is not among the finest of men. That human point seemed worth remembering, even amid the layers of campaign pretense."

Mr. Brooks has succeeded in portraying John McCain as he is: truthful, dynamic, unswerving - a man of character. A man who does not equivocate.

It is a shame that McCain was not elected president in 2000 - then liberals would have a lot less to complain about and much less bashing would be occurring.

I doubt McCain can build enough momentum to gain the Republican nomination, but it would be wonderful if he could. I have a friend who is a staunch Democrat. His comment to me was: "It is too bad that John McCain is not a Democrat." I am sure there are others who feel the same.
