Sun photographer Sam Morris' picture of a mixed martial arts fighter comforting his two distressed young daughters at the end of a bloody bout is becoming something of an iconic sports photograph.
Morris has won a first place in The Best of Photojournalism, an annual contest sponsored by the National Press Photographers Association. Morris won the award in the sports enterprise category.
The award marks the fourth Morris has won this year in competitions drawing international entries.
Previously, Morris's black-and-white photo won a first place in the Pictures of the Year competition, sponsored by the University of Missouri, for sports feature photography; second place in the National Headliner Awards, sponsored by the Press Club of Atlantic City, for sports photography, and an award of excellence from the Society for Newspaper Design for single sports photo.
In the Best of Photojournalism competition, judges remarked on how Morris' "great photo" captured the emotion of Mark Coleman's two daughters after they made their way into the ring to look with anguish at their pummeled father.
