Letter: Parks ordinance just not very realistic

Regarding the Las Vegas Sun's June 18 story "Good intentions aside, Las Vegas parks another law that won't fly":

It is ridiculous that Las Vegas officials have considered prohibiting people older than 12 from children's play areas in public parks , unless they are accompanying a child. Are they going to start carding people if they come within 100 feet of play areas or water features? And then what? Arrest them because they just wanted to walk their dog or have a picnic? It makes no sense, and no wonder the proposal was shelved.

I do, however, understand why they might have come up with such a proposal - with all the child predators running rampant, it does seem like a smart move, but it is just not realistic or fair to most of us. Parents should accompany their children, and not just let them play and run around parks alone. That should be their responsibility.

I don't think we need to stop going to parks if we're over 12 and worrying that we're going to be caught and treated like criminals. The whole picture just doesn't seem logical overall, and I don't think by passing that as a law would really solve any child predator issues.
