Letter: A tribute to Old Glory on Flag Day

In honor of Flag Day, celebrated on June 14, I created the following poem, "The Flag," which has been previously published in papers back East:

She has flown in troubled times, and never once complained.

She has stood in the best of times, and never felt restrained.

She has seen the world as few of us will, and never lost her nerve.

She has never been asked, but is always ready and willing to serve.

She doesn't ask for very much, but to be seen by all at her best.

She is after all a symbol of freedom, not to be taken in jest.

She doesn't speak out, when she's dashed and defiled.

She maintains her true grace, showing poise and great style.

She was hoisted aloft, when our Country was born.

She finds herself now sometimes tattered and worn.

She has never ever wavered, so proudly does she wave.

She only wants what we all wish for, a land of the free and brave.
