THE READERS SOMETIMES E-MAIL
Saturday, June 9, 2007 | 7:35 a.m.
Readers have opinions and fill my e-mail box, letting me know when mine are right (sometimes) and wrong (often). From time to time, I'll share their comments.
I just wanted to thank you for such a nice article on my husband, Richie Hearn, at the Indy 500 ("Back on the right track," June 1). The stories behind the scenes that people never get to see or hear are usually incredible - like how Richie flies to Indy on a one-way ticket (because he can't afford a round trip) or how he tries all year to get sponsors and after he does, they pull out in the 11th hour. And yet he still manages to get into that race one way or another. My husband's passion is racing and you made that clear in your article.
Brenda: I grew up around the Indy 500, and racing drivers have always been my heroes. And the one you live with is as classy as they come. If a smile and a kind word could be transformed into miles per hour, Richie would be in the pole position.
Ron: Thank you for writing an honest article about the Indy 500 ("Women have come a long way, baby ," May 30). Well done!
Lyn: If Janet Guthrie was Neil Armstrong , then you, as the second woman to race at Indy, were Buzz Aldrin.
Buzz walked on the moon.
You were Rookie of the Year at Indy in '92 and made cranky Bobby Unser eat his words, which might be the more impressive feat.
Regarding the Opening Line item about Alex Rodriguez ("Who wrote this unwritten rule book anyway?" June 4):
Howie Clark is now inoculated against the hidden ball trick. Sandlot ball lives, even at the $28 million level.
Storrs: I heard the next time the Yanks come to town, the Blue Jays are going to make right field "out" when A-Rod comes to bat. Ha! That will teach him.
Thanks for the great update on The Mtn. TV situation (" ... a TV contract that costs the MWC much more than money," June 7). I am happy there are lawyers assigned, as are many of my satellite-user friends. Is there anything we can do as subscribers to help this cause?
Gordon: Send en e-mail to commissioner Craig Thompson and the Mountain West presidents and tell them not to rush getting The Mtn. on the air because you are enjoying "Leave It to Beaver" reruns more than a San Diego State vs. UNLV football game. Maybe that will get their attention because nothing else apparently has.
