Letter: Like him or not, Reid reflects will of people
Sunday, July 22, 2007 | 1:19 a.m.
I wish to commend the Las Vegas Sun's Lisa Mascaro for her excellent profile on July 19 of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and his efforts to bring an end to the war in Iraq. Like him or not, this much is certain about Sen. Reid:
He was elected to be our voice in Washington. Most Nevadans are opposed to this war and want immediate action taken to bring it to an end. By pressing for a vote to begin the troop withdrawal process, Sen. Reid is reflecting the will of the majority of the people he represents.
Sen. John Ensign is not expressing the will of the people by his allegiance to President Bush and his failed Iraq policies.
I have no sympathy for the senators who complained about being inconvenienced by the all-night debate on the war in Iraq. The loss of a few hours of sleep is nothing compared with the enormous sacrifices the more than 158,000 men and women in the U.S. military are currently making in Iraq, not to mention all those who served and have already returned home. And it certainly does not compare with the more than 3,600 military men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice of their lives.
Some senators voiced their frustration that the all-night debate on the Senate floor was a meaningless waste of time that served no purpose.
Sounds like what this country is doing in Iraq.
