Letter: Leadership, Bush don’t go together

It is impossible to find any logic in Lee Gliddon Jr.'s July 15 letter stating that George Bush's leadership strengthens the United States. For six years Bush has had the support of a Republican-controlled Congress that was able to rubber stamp all of the initiatives he has undertaken in Iraq. To think that Democrats should not speak out against these failed policies is ludicrous.

The president has made serious mistakes undertaking an unnecessary mission that he was warned might become a quagmire. He chose a defense secretary who beat down every general who said thousands more troops would be needed than were actually sent.

Having awarded Gen. Tommy Franks the Medal of Freedom after his service to the country during the successful invasion of Iraq, the president now criticizes Gen. Franks for not asking for more troops. The president does not mention that Donald Rumsfeld would not have tolerated that request, and Franks would have been "retired" very quickly if he had requested more troops.

Leadership is not a term I associate with George W. Bush. Isolated, inflexible and irresponsible seem to better describe the man. I marvel at the fact that he can still influence 30 out of every 100 people.
