Letter: Situation in Iraq was predictable, unenviable

Although I'm a Republican, and have been all my life, I find it hard to accept the current status of the Iraq war. I personally was against invading from the very beginning, which brings to mind 1991 and the first Gulf War.

Then-Defense Secretary Dick Cheney had stated that, as we had Saddam Hussein cornered in Bagdad with 550,000-plus U.S. and coalition troops and the whole world behind us, that it would be a quagmire to advance on to Bagdad and finish off Saddam and his Republican Guard.

But now we have 150,000-plus troops in Iraq, and virtually no one behind us other than the British , who are starting to withdraw, and today it seems more like a quagmire than at anytime in the past. Sometimes it pays to look back on past decisions and reflect.

I agree that we need to somehow broker a peace agreement with all the warring parties for a just settlement. A complete withdrawal at this time will create a disaster for all concerned, especially the innocent Iraqis who are being killed every day.
