Letter: Recognize real heroes - while they’re alive

There was a man who tackled the alleged shooter at New York-New York and there were others who stopped the alleged shooter from injuring more people.

Wouldn't it be wonderful to have a parade and awards ceremony for people when they are still alive and let them know that they are appreciated, instead of naming things after them after they die, saying great things at their funeral and sending flowers to the family?

Every day, there are doctors and nurses and firefighters and police officers and military personnel who save lives. Teachers and parents shape our future. Let them know you appreciate them and all their hard work today.

It seems the only ones who are ever honored are the ones who can throw a basketball through a hoop or hit a baseball , and many of them are strung out on drugs, use steroids, are drinkers or have an arrest record , and wouldn't even stop to give you the time of day.

Our society has got it all wrong. Remember to say, when the people are still alive to appreciate it, "Thank you, you made a difference . Your hard work, bravery and efforts are heroic!"
