Editorial: Luck lines up today

Ma ny people are hoping today is their lucky day because the calendar is aligned for a once-in-a-lifetime event: July 7, 2007, or 7/7/07.

To the superstitious, this is a big day. Three sevens are like a trunk full of lucky charms to those who believe in such things. Break a mirror? Walk under a ladder? Don't worry. Apparently nothing can disturb three sevens. So some people are testing their luck, crossing their fingers and taking a leap of faith, hoping that their lucky stars, along with the sevens, have aligned.

The Associated Press reports that a yogi in California has plans for a gong mediation at 7 p.m. today to try to achieve "massive harmony." Some Christians are gathering today in a football stadium in Tennessee to pray. (Some people say the number seven is a biblical sign of completion or perfection.)

The wedding planning site The-Knot.com estimates that 38,000 site users will wed today, more than three times the normal for a July weekend. Wedding dressmaker David's Bridal, which estimates there will be 70,000 weddings in America today, expected to deliver 20,000 dresses for ceremonies today, the Agence France-Presse news service reported.

Las Vegas, of course, will be abuzz with people trying to cash in on the perceived luck of the sevens. Wedding chapels are booked and wedding events are planned. At Mandalay Bay, for instance, couples pay $1,777 for a 7 p.m. ceremony on the resort's beach, complete with champagne toast, dinner and concert.

But love is not the only thing people hope they are lucky in today.

Seven, after all, is a winning roll in craps, and three sevens equal 21 or a winning line on a slot machine.

While it seems silly to us to make such a fuss over the number that comes after six and before eight, we don't want to rain on seven's - or anyone else's - parade. If this is your big day, we wish you all the luck in the world.
