LOOKING IN ON: CITY HALL

Nevada will officially transfer ownership of Floyd Lamb Park to Las Vegas today.

City officials, including City Manager Doug Selby and Councilman Steve Ross, will accept the deed at 8:30 a.m. in front of the gazebo at the Ranch House in the park's historic section.

State Sen . Dennis Nolan, R-Las Vegas, and Assemblywoman Marilyn Kirkpatrick, D-North Las Vegas, will present the deed.

"The park has been a significant part of our history and we can't wait to make it even better for the citizens of Las Vegas," Ross said.

Under a plan the Las Vegas City Council approved in April, the park's land and an adjoining 1,300 acres owned by the Bureau of Land Management may be used only for recreation, conservation and critical municipal infrastructure .

The park's name will officially be changed to Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs.

Another event with historical significance will occur today in downtown Las Vegas .

The former Post Office building at 300 Stewart Ave., which has been shrouded in plastic for several months, will be unwrapped at 10:30 a.m. in a ceremony hosted by Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman and Councilman Ricki Barlow.

The building, which is being converted into a Las Vegas museum, has been covered to protect the exterior during an extensive renovation of windows.

The renovation will now focus on interior repairs, including demolition, salvaging of historical materials and bringing the structure up to current codes.

The building, which opened in 1933 as part of a government building effort related to Hoover Dam construction, also served as a federal courthouse.

The museum is to open in 2009.

The July 4 holiday has altered the Las Vegas City Council schedule for July.

Council meetings usually occur on the first and third Wednesdays of each month, but the first Wednesday this month is July 4.

As a result, there will be a three-week gap between council meetings, followed by meetings on July 11 and 18.

"It's a little bit challenging for us, but we've done it before," City Manager Doug Selby said.

There is the potential for the July 11 meeting to be a marathon session because of the three-week interval, followed by an agenda with relatively few items the following week.

A light schedule for the July 18 meeting could be a blessing .

At that meeting the council is expected to consider a recommendation for a developer on a proposed downtown arena . With little if any chance for prior public scrutiny of the proposal, that item is expected to produce a lengthy discussion.
