Keeping ‘em in stitches for 7/7/07
Sunday, July 1, 2007 | 7:07 a.m.
Seamstress Cindy Dennis has been busy getting ready for the crush of Las Vegas weddings on "lucky Saturday." Dennis and co-workers at Celebrations Bridal and Fashion are outfitting 28 of the 7/7/07 brides.
Even after 22 years altering wedding dresses, she still loves the tedious work - fixing sequins, fine - tuning the fit, making sure it is just perfect.
"To see that bride so happy and looking so beautiful, and the hugs, that's the satisfaction," she says. "I always say it's the most important dress of a girl's life, so I feel kind of important."
Dennis started sewing as a young girl in Minnesota.
"You've got the long cold winters to do nothing else. Both of my grandmothers were expert sewers, and my mother, so I learned a lot from them, and when I was about to give up, my grandma kept me going. My passion is art really, so I like the creative part of making something."
She used to walk by The Bridal Boutique every day on the way to school.
"I used to say, 'Wouldn't it be fun to work in that store someday?' " she says. "Little did I know, a few years down the road that's where I started sewing and working in bridal."
She worked there for three years before moving to Las Vegas in 1988.
Dennis jokes that she is one-up on the 7/7/07 couples. After all, she was married at 8 p.m. on 8/8/88. She and her husband - who'd been going out for eight years - originally planned to get married in October but moved up their wedding. "I just figured my husband wouldn't forget his anniversary and it has a nice ring to it." It was only the day after their wedding that she learned all those eights - viewed as a symbol of infinity - had prompted mass weddings around the globe.
Will the aligned numbers be lucky for the this batch of newlyweds?
"It's been good to me!" Dennis says.
